Slipping a stitch ?

If directions do not say which way to slip a stitch, what is the general rule then, slip it Knitwise or Purlwise?


K20, p7, p3tog, turn.
sl1,k7, sl1, k2tog, psso, turn.
sl1, p7, p3tog, turn.

On the 2nd row, since it is a knit stitch after the slip, would you slip that one knit and the next row, there is a purl stitch after the slip so you would slip that one purl?

If it doesn't say then usually that means to slip purl wise

The st at the beginning of the row is slipped purlwise, but the one involved in the decrease (sl 1, k2tog, psso) is slipped knitwise.

The basic rule is if you're not going to do anything to that stitch in the same row, slip pwise. If you do, slip knitwise.

Then there's ALWAYS the exception - Unless the pattern tells you different....

Yes I know. This was the first time I had seen it without actually having sl1 K or sl1 P, that is why I was confused. I knew to do the one before the psso as a sl1 K but that beginning one is what threw me. Always so good to get quick help here. As always, thanks.

I slip purlwise unless told otherwise by the pattern.

I've been knitting so long it is automatic so you made me think. Others are right it is purlwise unless directions say different. Most patterns tell you but when they don't go purl.

Don't forget... slip purlwise if it's the first st, but if it's a slip stitch in a decrease (skp/ssk) then it should be slipped knitwise. Unless the pattern says differently.
