Convert Traditional Pattern to Cable Pattern

I am making a set of Christmas Stockings for a family member. It is for their dogs.

I found a paw print pattern - this one: http://thechroniclesofyarnia.blogspo...t-pattern.html - and I want to incorporate it into the stocking. I am making the stocking in the round.

Would I simply make each even line a purl instead of a knit? Is it that easy to convert a pattern to cable needles?

In order to do that pattern in the round, you'd work every other row all knits, and the rows in between would be purled where the paw is.

If I were to do this, I'd make a chart on a piece of graph paper.

Just to let you know, a 'cable' pattern is a pattern of stitches crossed over each other. And a cable needle is a short one to hold some of the stitches when you cross them. When you knit in the round, you use a circular needle, which has a cord or cable in it. I prefer to use cord because cable can get confused with the other.
