possible pattern mistake?
I am working from the book "Easy Baby Knits" by Claire Montgomerie. I am doing the matinee jacket P.90. I have finished the back and am working on the sides now but realize that the finished length listed, of the front and back sides, is not consistent with the back length. Also, it seems really weird to me that in one place it says to knit the left and front sides to 8 1/2" but then after that during the neck shaping it says to knit to a length of 8". How do you get 8" after knitting to 8 1/2"??

Could it be that you're supposed to start the neck shaping at 8 inches? Neck shaping starts before shoulder shaping.

How long is the back?

ETA--Often, a pattern will say to knit to 8 1/2 inches, but at the same time start the neck shaping at 8 inches.

I kind of understand what you are saying, but yet I don't. The back measures
9 1/2".

It says in the pattern to do the two rows that form the upper part of the sweater until left front is 8 1/2". Then it continues on with neck shaping. After decreasing to the last 13 st, it says to work in pattern on these sts until left front measures 8", ending with a WS row and then bind off. HUH??? How can it go from 8 1/2" in length to 8" in length at the end?
The measurements for the right side say the same except it goes from 8 1/4" in length to 8" in length after neck shaping. That does not make sense to me at all.

Rachel, thank you so much for the website address. I contacted her and I was right; there were actually five mistakes in measurements throughtout the pattern. I got the corrections and now things are looking much better.
