I have the double ended hooks and I like them. They aren't my favorite shape for crocheting, but they are fine for picking up dropped stitches.

dropped sts
I have some old hooks which were my mothers that I use to pick up sts. The heads have a flatness which holds the yarn instead of the roundness of most hook heads.

Thanks for the tip Jan! I did check them all, and they were fine! I also tested out my ball winder and wound the 4 skeins that I bough - worked well too! I don't have a swift and I didn't wind the skein over a chair, but held it in my lap and fed it through - worked out pretty well. I'm sure I won't be able to do that for all types of skeins, depending on how they are wound, but it worked for the KP yarn Now I have 4 pretty (but small!) cakes
