Hey all,
Suggest: Buy a pair of shoes that look appropriate/right (I prefer cheaper shoes!) Then buy an insole. The insoles seem to be quite cheap and last longer than the shoes (as I tend to wear out the bottom of the shoe). My favorite insoles are ones that support the arch of the foot and are made of gel. Insoles can be transferable, so you may only need to buy one insole for lots of shoes!

I second the earth shoes! corrected my arch, ankle, knee, hip, and back pain issues. Literally FIXED my arches, changed the way I walk! Can't give them any higher a recommendation!

Update on my Nike shoes: They have looked at my shoes I sent back to them and determined it was a manufacturing fault, so I'll be getting a new pair from them for free!

That's awesome that they are sending you a new pair ! I know Nike will also sell you a mismatched pair of shoes if your feet are more than a size different from L to R. It comes in handy for some of out patients, unfortunately for most they run too narrow.
