Shaping Shoulders!?
Make neck opening by knitting across first 44 stitches, placing the center 20 stitches onto holder or scrap yarn, and knitting the remaining 44 stitches. Continue on right side of neck only, working all following neck decreases for this side one stitch in from the egde as follows:
on WS: Purl to last 3 stitches, P2tog, P1
on RS: K1, K2tog, K to end.
**Shape neck by decreasing one stitch at neck edge EVERY row 6 times, then EVERY OTHER ROW, 4 times. Continue in stockinette stitch until front is as long as back to beginning of shoulder shaping (see *) and complete as for back.

So I knit the first 44 stitches like it says and I've slip stitched the 20 center stitches onto an extra needle. This is where I get am I supposed to knit the remaining 44 stitches? Wouldn't I have an extra loop of yarn if I did that? Am I supposed to use a new ball of yarn or something? I am confused by the shaping of the shoulders in general so it would be of great help if someone broke this down into (very) detailed steps for me since I am new to knitting and this is my first sweater.

You need another yarn strand, either from a 2nd skein or the other end of the one you're working from. Just take the new end and finish knitting the sts on that row. Then you're only going to work on these sts for now, so you turn and on the WS row, purl until there's 3 sts before the gap and p2tog, p1. Then turn again and on the RS row, K1, K2tog, K to end. Do these 2 rows 4 more times, then skip the decs on the purl row and only do it on the knit row 4 times. Then just knit the sts with no decs until the front is the same length as the back up to where you started the shoulder shaping, and to the same, which is probably binding off sts beginning with a WS, purl row.
