Need sewing help....with a knit sweater

HI all...Well I picked up this Awesome book..."Sweater Surgery" and it details how re cycle old sweaters..well my first donated/experimental sweater is "all" in stockinette..so (du) when I cut off the sleeve (with the ribbing) to make a hat..guess what? It started to unravel..no problem right? NOt..I thought I could run it under the machine and viola..Nope didn't work..So here's my question ( I guess this falls under the "steeking" category..How will/can I re-use sleeves, body etc...from a stockinette sweater without it unraveling? Any clues..Thanks

I would expect nearly any knit sweater to start to unravel when it's cut into, no matter what stitch it is. Doesn't the book cover this? I am curoius now - off to see if my library has this book yet.....

Yep, any yarn will unravel except for maybe the stickiest wools and maybe mohair. Even those will unravel some too though.

After going over and over the "book" ...looks like they mainly use "felted" stuff..or take a sweater than "felt"...but they do mention "st" sweaters..Wow I thought I had discovered something waaaay cool, cause I've had to "hang up" the needles for awhile due to lots of hand aches and pains..I still want to donate hats and scarves....

I am the author of Sweater Surgery and I would like to try to help you with your project. Sorry you are having trouble. You say you tried to sew but it didn't work, I am curious why not? I sew every type of sweater from lacework , standard knit to felted with no problem. I often use the slight bit of unraveling as a design element such as page 54-55 scarf

You can:
A. Sew a running stitch before you cut (like when steeking a sweater)
B. Cut the sweater and sew the seam twice once for the seam and once to secure edges.

Wow Hi..I love your book I cut a "sleeve" and didn't sew it first duh!!! That might of worked out well....but all of your projects are AWESOME!!!! I'm gonna try every one..Thanks again
