Problems with gauge

I need help with a problem that relates to pattern gauge. I have a pattern with a gauge of 11 St = 4" on size 11 needles. I purchased yarn with a gauge of 14 St = 4" on size 10 needles. I thought that I could get the desired gauge by adjusting the needle size. Unfortunately, I have to go up to a size 15 needle to get the right gauge and when I do that, the knit is too open and airy to get the look I want. I tried dropping the needle size and doubling the yarn but the knit then becomes too dense. Any suggestions beyond returning the yarn and buying something different???
