Knitting a dickey...

I'm having a really hard time finding a good, but easy, pattern for a dickey lately. My hubby asked me to knit one for his son for Christmas and I'm stumped.
I've tried out 3 different patterns so far and can't seem to get further than making the 1X1 ribbed bit that goes around the neck.
I need good basic instructions for this...
Can you help me with this?

Sure, someone here can most likely help. But we need to know what exactly you are having trouble with. Pick out the pattern that you think seems the easiest to you and give us a link to it (if you can, or what book or whatever it might be in, or at least the name of the pattern) or some of the directions after the ribbing. We will also want to know how many stitches you have on the needles. (in other words give a short rundown of what you have done so far, and then the next directions that are giving you trouble.) Don't paste the whole pattern here, as that is against copyright rules, but a bit of it at a time till we can work you over the rough spots is okay.

Thank you for your reply but I gave up and designed my own. I doubt that it's as good as the ones I saw pictured but it will do.
I can't tell you how many times I ripped the whole thing back to the ribbing... but it was worth it in the end. It should at least keep the fellow warm as he works in the oil fields of Alberta.
I added a crochetted line in black around the edges of the front and back bibs.
I've, hopefully, attached a pic or 2 to show. or not... gotta find out how...
In any case, it was very simple... I cast on 70 sts, evened them out on 3 dpn and did K1,P1 for about 4", then added 10 more stitches evenly on the rows for the last rib. Then I divided up the 80sts, putting 40 of them (the back stitches) on a st holder and doing a stocking stitch on the 40 front sts.
Once they were done I took the 40 sts off the stitch holder and st. st'd them the same only making a smaller bib (I was getting bored with this project by then)
Then I decided to do the crochet around the edges of the bibs formed by the st. st. and it looks quite nice. I also blocked it using a spray and a heavy book. Came out great!
I used worsted weight and size 5mm dpn and straights.

I understand that this is coming in late and that you have already started on your own pattern. However, I have always been happy with the knitting Fiends pattern calculators.

Thanks for the advice, Cacunn... I did see this one but I found it too complicated for me to follow. My brain just ain't what it used to be....
