Welcome to Knitting Help!

What you're describing is intarsia. There is a video at the top of the page under advanced techniques. That'll show you how to twist/cross your yarns together on the wrong side so there are no holes. You should only be knitting on the front/right side.

. . . and when you purl the ws side, your yarns should cross on the side facing you. When you knit the rs, the yarns should be in back of the work.
