How to decrease for top of Hat
Oh, I am frustrated.

I'm making my own (in the round) pattern for a hat to match Yarn Harlot's One Row Scarf.

I cast on 80 sts and the pattern is two rows with a four stitch repeat.

CO 80 sts, pm, join for in the round.
k2, p2 rib for about an inch or 3 cm.

row A (knit row): * k, k, twist k, p * repeat across, mm
row B (purl row): * p, p, k, p * repeat across, mm

Repeat rows A, and B for desired length (about 4 to 5 inches)

Decreases: (the sticking point) I haven't found a pattern that looks smooth and aesthetic yet.

My questions are...

How many stitches to decrease in a round? I am trying to make a five panel (four repeats per panel).

I figured out I need more than five decreases in a single row, but how many more do I need.

I wanted to only decrease in the purl rows *using p2 tog*.

Will I need to dec in the knit rows too?

How do you keep track of your different test dec patterns?

TIA

Maybe I'll just examine some other knit hat patterns and see how they dec. Maybe I'll learn something from them.

Generally a hat pattern will dec about 6-9 sts every other row, 8 usually being the most common. So you can work 8, k/p 2tog and repeat on the first round, do a round in pattern then dec work 7, p/k 2tog. Every dec row you work 1 less stitch between decs and then when you get down to about 3 sts between decs do them on every round. Now how you do that and stay in pattern is up to you....
