Edging Help! (pics)

Hello All,

I'm new to crochet. I've made my first dishcloth and I would like to add a border/edging. I see how I can pick up the top and bottom stitches to add a border, but not the sides - the stitches aren't uniform. Maybe I'm doing something wrong when I turn my piece?
