new knitter
in two spots it looks like a little hole-does this mean I dropped a stitch

If you can see stitches below the holes that you can un-ravel, like by pulling the yarn, it's a dropped stitch. If there are no stitches that can be un-raveled it's probably a yarn over (YO). Also dropped stitches decrease your stitch count, YOs increase your stitch count. So if you have less stitches, you dropped stitches: more stitches, you made YOs.
