Is there a way to crochet that is similar to double knitting? So there are two layers, so it's really thick, and makes a pocket? I've been searching online, but I'm just not able to find anything that doesn't include seaming two pieces.

You could use the method shown in the videos on THIS POST, but only don't finish it off by sewing the seam. Your beginning chain and how many rounds you crochet would determine the finished size.

This is exactly what I needed to know. I wanted to make hot pads, too!! But I did not want to make two panels and seam up four sides. Thank you so much for giving me this information. I will give it a try and post pics when I'm done.
