Help decreasing cap crown

New at knitting. I cast on 80 stitches. Am now ready to decrease the. Crown of the cap. Round 1. Knit 5, knit 2 together. Repeat 7 more times, totaling 8 sections. Round 2 knit 4, knit 2 tog etc, etc. I need help!

What are you having trouble with? The pattern seems pretty straight forward so a little more info would help. Do just what it says for each row. Each row (or round) will have you knitting one less stitch on the knit section than the previous row before you k2tog.

Just a thought...I use markers so I don't really have to think about it after the first row. In other words...

Row 1. *k5, k2tog, pm* continue around till end of round.

From the start of each round you knit to the last two stitches before the marker and knit those two together. Slip marker to right needle and continue in that manner. Do it one step at a time and it'll all make sense.

What I don't understand is the part that says totaling 8 sections. Should I divide the 80 stitches into 8 sections with markers before I start with the knit 5, knit 2 together. If so, that would mean 10 stitches are in each section and 5 & 2 add up to 7, so what about the remaining stitches?

My initial reaction was to divide into 8 sections of 10 sts each and I think that is what the pattern is aiming for. To do that, knit 8, k2tog around. You'll do this 8 times, total. Usually the next row is plain knit and the following row would be k7, k2tog. Those last 2 rows repeat (decreasing the number of sts between the k2tog by one on each decrease row).
You really don't need to use markers, but if you'd like, it will make sure that you don't knit too many or too few sts between the dcreases.

Can you give us a pattern link? I normally do what salmonac does as well. I responded to what you put down, but those numbers do sound off.

What you said totally makes sense to me. The pattern I am using is from Knots of Love-"Occasional Purl Pattern". My daughter starts chemo tomorrow and I am making this for her. Thank you so much for your help.
