new knitter-how do you place stitch markers?

Do they just slide over the yarn? Mine don't have any way to open.:

The ones like that go on the needle to mark certain stitches. I use them to mark decreases or other pattern details if I need to. Don't put them on the yarn or you won't be able to get them out w/o cutting them.
