Teenage Grandson....

My teenage grandson is wanting to learn how to knit. He knows how to cast on, bind off, knit and purl but he has never followed a pattern.
I would like to get him a book on how to do basic knitting... like for a hat or something but I've not been able to find anything I thought was suitable for him.
He is a bit autistic and has tourettes as well... I'd love to find something that had a lot of pictures in it as well as really easy instructions that assume you know nothing and therefore tell you.
He's very enthusiastic about knitting but I think he is rapidly tiring of knitting dish cloths...

Could someone please offer some hints as to where I could find such a book.. or the name of a book that would fit the bill?
I'd appreciate any help I can get.

That's wonderful that your grandson has learned so much and actually finished some dishcloths. My children liked learning and that was the end of it.
I'd try the library or a bookstore first to see if the patterns look do-able to you. There are some books on Amazon that look like possibilities, too. I'm onlly familiar with "One Skein Wonders" but you might look these up and see what you think. Sometimes the reviews both positive and negative are helpful.

I looked at Amazon's site after typing in children's knitting on the internet. There is a book that might work called A First Book of Knitting for Children. I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for, but from the description it has some simple animal patterns in it as well as instructions. There were others listed on Amazon as well.

I tried the books you suggested and they were not quite right but they lead me to other books that were! Hurrah!
I bot a lovely book that includes needles and one skein of yarn and it's full of little knitty projects that I think will keep him entertained long enough that he will be ready to get on with some bigger projects.
It's called: Knitting: Learn to Knit Six Great Projects.
Love it!

Wonderful. Based on my experience with my own grandson who has Asperger's but doesn't want to learn to knit, with things he loves he loves to share. Perhaps your GS would like to make a video or tutorial of something he likes and could teach others. My GS loves to "teach" others. If he posted something online and you let us know we could give positive feedback, which I'm sure would be well deserved. He sounds like a wonderful boy who has a wonderful grandma. Kudos for both of you!

I have 5 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren and all but 1 have autism... this boy is a step-grandson.
That's 2 girls and 3 boys with autism.
I'm always looking for things I can do with them.

Hi Nonny,
Thank yu for your imput into this discussion. I will keep this book in mind for another time...
I can't believe how much it cost me to have a book delivered to Canada...

Wow. That's a handful of loving challenges and opportunities you have there. You are an amazing family! Whatever your grandson who knits decides to do with it, I certainly wish him the very best. The very best for you, too. You are one special lady.

I think that knitting is a very good idea and it's impressive that your grandson has continued with it. I hope there are some intriguing patterns in the book you bought that will keep up his interest. Yes, all the best to you and your fine family.
