Question about instructions for hood on a baby sweater

I am making my first sweater that has a hood attached. It begins with 44 stitches, and then it says to knit 22 stitches, make one (mark this stitch) and knit 22 stitches. This gives me 45 stitches to work with. The instructions say to: knit every row, increasing one stitch on each side of marked stitch every right side row 8 times to 60 stitches. I do not understand how I am supposed to end up with an even number of stitches when I am increasing by 2 each time. What am I missing? Thanks for your help.

Well someone didn't think things out right. I don't think there's a need to do a M1 on the first row, just place a marker there and increase before and after it on the following rows until you have the correct number of stitches. The 3 needle BO needs an even number of stitches anyway.

I think you are correct. This is not the first place in this pattern where I feel the directions were off. When I made the sleeves for the 6 month size, the length was reached way before the decreases were finished. I had to adjust at the end. Thank you for your input
