the dreaded divide for VEE NECK
OK - so it's been a while, but I've been busy and actually finished the green vest is was talking about when I was last here - it's wonderful, though the weather's too warm to wear it here now.
So, I'm now well into my second vest, this is a Vee Neck Cable Vest (no buttons, thank god).
I've completed the BACK,
I've completed the FRONT, up to the point where the pattern says
(Shape Armholes - which was basically casting off 8 sts at either end (keeping the cable pattern correct)).
and now I come to DIVIDE FOR VEE NECK -
1st row - K2tog, K35, P6 C4F, P3, TURN. Cont on these 49 sts.
And it's the "Cont on these 49 sts" that puzzles me ... so I turn my knitting around and head back to where I came from BUT do I knit the knit sts and purl the purl ones??

Hi David,
Yes continue back on the row with the pattern that you have been doing on the fronts. So if its basically stockinette (knit rows alternating with purl rows) and a cable flanked by purl sts, continue on the back with knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you.

OK - so I just had an epiphany about this ... the problem being is the redundant string of text:
Cont on these 49 sts
I just realised that 2nd row IS continuing on these 49 sts because the work has been turned and I'm now heading back to the armhole edge.
SHEESH HOLY MOTHER OF A NASTY FUR BALL I wish patterns were written more simply!!

And just for the sake of clarity here's the pattern verbatim (obviously I"m leaving out irrelevant sts numbers based on the size garment I'm working on)
DIVIDE FOR VEE NECK -
1st row - K2tog, K35, P6, C4F, P3, turn.
Cont on these 49 sts.
2nd row - K3, P4, K6, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog.
3rd row - K2tog, knit to last 15 sts, K2tog, P6, K4, P3.
4th row - K3, P4, K6, purl to last 2 sts, P2tog.
Last 4 rows for patt for rem, noting dec.
Keeping patt correct, dec one st at armhole edge in every row 3 times, AT SAME TIME dec one st at neck edge (inside 13 sts as before) in next row, then in every foll alt row until 36 sts rem, then in every foll 4th row until 27 sts rem.
Cont in patt withot shaping until armhole measures same as Back to beg of shoulder shaping, working last row on wrong side.

And here's a picture of the vest I'm knitting ... which will help clarify things I think.

Oh, very good-looking! I love the intricate cablework that's going on up the front and around the V-neck.

It's still a nice looking vest whichever way you look at it! The split cable is a nice feature.

That's a great looking vest (and I'm not really a vesty type person). I hope your rendition turns out looking this good (even sideways)!! And I'm sure it will.
Do you think your green vest is worthy of having its picture posted here? We'd love to see it. You don't have to model it; just snap its picture while it's quietly sleeping in a stretched out position!

Hi, David, I've missed you. I wondered at the "dreaded" part of your thread title, with those cables I think I understand. You're braver than I! I'm sure it will work out great, you'll have an awesome vest.
