Confused on Ribbing Stitch Instructions

I've just completed the guage swatch for a sweater I am trying to knit; I can't find a link to it online. I followed the advice to cast on more stitches than called for.

The guage instructions are:

25 stitches 28 rows to 4" on No. 6 needles over p 3, k 1 ribbing.

When I measure 4" in the middle of the swatch, I get 17 stitches. Now I'm not sure what to do.

You need smaller needles and/or yarn to achieve more sts/inch.
What yarn (worsted, bulky, other) and needle size are you using and what does the pattern specify?

The pattern specifies "sport weight yarn" and No. 6 needles. I am using No. 6 and Caron 100% acrylic - medium, No. 4 - yarn.

I believe #4 means worsted weight which is a thicker yarn than sport weight. I don't have time to look it up to confirm right now, you could see if searching helps you determine if it will work.

Ahhh, when you're using a heavier yarn than in the pattern, you may not be able to get gauge even if you go down 3 or 4 needle sizes. If you do, then it will likely be much too stiff. Better to find the fabric density you like (probably on size 8s) and do a smaller size of the pattern instead.
