don't think I am doing this correctly?? I do the yo which bring the yarn to the front, slip the two stitches, then knit the two together ?? just somehow doesn't seem right to have the yarn in front after the slip for the knit two together

Don't think of a yo as yarn forward, it's really a wrap around the needle, similar to how you make a knit stitch and the yarn will end up in back. Do that, then slip the 2 sts separately as if to knit, insert the L needle into the front of them and wrap the yarn around the R needle to ktog.
