Shawl Collared Vest

I made a shawl collared vest. The last thing I need to do is attach the shawl collar and I have no idea on how to do that! I've just started knitting again after 25 years.

I cannot put in a link due to being new, but if you Google "Shawl Collared Vest Pattern by Kathy Perry" it will show up in Ravelry.

Could someone help me on the correct way to attach the collar? Should the seam be on the RS under collar or should the seam be on the inside of the vest? Not sure what would be the best technique to use to attach it.

My first choice for seaming is mattress stitch but another may well be a better choice. Anyhow, I found the pattern, I think, and someone else will know the seaming answer.
