I am doing the collar and front borders... it says:
Next Row: Rib 4, cast off 1 st, (rib 9, cast off 1 st) x 3,
rib to the end
Now I have tried many different ways but it does not seem to be working.
Heres one way I tried: Rib 4, then to cast off the 1 stitch, I knitted a stitch, then another and pulled one over the other... problem is that my rib pattern changes e.g. its Knit Knit Purl Purl, K K P P etc but when I do it, K K P P then K P P P (that happens because of the casting off bit)
What am I doing wrong? I think the casting off is to make holes for buttons?
If you rib 4 (kkpp), use the next two knit sts to cast off one, you'll continue on with ppkkpp etc for the rib. When you come back on the next row, you'll probably cast on over the cast off st. You still want to maintain the kkpp rib so that the columns of knits and purls line up nicely.
Maintain your rib pattern regardless of where the CO stitches fall.
"I tried: Rib 4, then to cast off the 1 stitch, I knitted a stitch, then another and pulled one over the other..."
Yes. Assuming you are working a 2x2 rib this would have been...
k2 (CO1 and maintain the other as 1st stitch of next series)
then P2, K2, P2, k2 (you should have 9sts on needle since last CO)
P2 (CO1 and maintain the other as 1st stitch of next series)...
Just knit the knits and purl the purls as they appear. Make sure to work 2 sts before CO the one, and count the one remaining st as the start of your next series.
