Thanks for all the good information on the penguins.
For the increases in ribbing, you can increase on the purl sts and it will be less obvious. So for the 50sts, increase 12sts evenly. you would increase about every 4sts e.g. k2, p1, increase in the next purl st and continue.

You know, those would be cute sweaters for a child's teddy bear. I know a man who crochets red and green vests for teddy bears he picks up at thrift stores. He sells the bears with vests at flea markets at Christmas time for some extra cash.
