Good idea! I'll let the admin know there's interest.

thanks jan... some of us beginners (me) have taken a long time to even get a few projects done, so any help for easier access would be great.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is a feature that is on the top of our list for improving the pattern sections on KH. The listings of patterns have grown considerably over the last few years and we think it would be great to start adding some sorting capabilities. I don't have an ETA, but it something we will be focusing on.

Lion brand yarn groups their patterns by ability: beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, and advanced. However, be advised that this site is not always user friendly. Sometimes they mix knitting and crochet patterns and give you patterns that have nothing to do with what you entered in the search box.

I've given up trying to find things on the Lion Brand site. Same with Red Heart. I mostly just go to Ravelry, there I can sort for just free knitting patterns and free knitting patterns are about all I see, occasionally a for purchase pattern sneaks in. Works for me. From there I may end up at Red Heart or Lion Brand but only in a roundabout way.

Great timing! I left the Lion Brand site maybe 15 minutes ago. I was looking for two things, and I found each one on the first try.

What I've learned about the Lion Brand site pattern search is that it's better to put in your own key words once you've selected "Pattern Finder." Or, as Lion Brand puts it, "Describe what you want." I don't have a lot of luck using their check-box system (the one that suggests that we "Search by category"), but when I list my own criteria, like

Tunisian Crochet afghan or
Tunisian Crochet,

I find exactly what I'm looking for.

If anyone would like to duplicate my search (just to experience some success for themselves! ), Lion Brand should give you SIX hits on the "afghan" search and TEN hits on the "Tunisian Crochet" search, of which SIX will be the afghans and FOUR will be other items.

If you get extra items, they're holding out on me! and if you get fewer items, they're holding out on you!

Bonne chance! Buena suerte!

DCM, thanks, I did try it. I then searched for knit hat and I got knit hats. The pages I scrolled only had knit hats. How'd I not figure that one out?

Tunisian Crochet afghan - 6 hitss
Tunisian Crochet - 10 hits

Wow! I could've had a V8.
