problem following socks pattern please help
Hello Everyone,

New here just joined. I am following a pattern for knitting socks

Instructions

Shape heel

Next Row k8 sts only, turn.
Work 9 rows in st st on these 8 sts.
Dec Row k2, k2 tog tbl, k1, turn
Next row Sl 1, p3
Dec Row k3, k2 tog tbl, k1, turn.
Next row Sl 1, p3
Dec Row k3, k2 tog tbl, k1 turn.
Next row sl 1, p4
Dec row k4, k2 tog tbl, turn.
Next row sl 1, p4. Break off yarn, leave these sts on a holder.

With right side facing, slip next 12 sts on a holder, rejoin M to rem sts, k to end. (problem here don't know what part to put 12 sts on holder)

There was 38 sts to start with

Next row P8 sts only, turn.
Work 9 rows in st st on these 8 sts only.
Dec row P2, p2 tog, p1, turn.
Next row Sl 1, k3
Dec row P3, p2 tog, pl, turn.
Next row Sl 1, k4
Dec row P4, p2 tog, break yarn.
Leave rem 5 sts on a holder (I ended with 4 sts instead)
Cont in stripes, rejoin P (That's the blue colour stripe)

Shape instep

Next row With right side facing, k5 sts from the first holder,
pick up and k8 sts evenly along inside edge of hell and k5 sts from holder, 38 sts. (of course I'm having problem here too)

I so would like to knit these socks properly it's for my grandchild who is on the way. I've never knitted a pair of socks before and would like to learn.

Any help would be appreciated, I hope no one would mind that put all those instructions just want people to be able to read it better and see where I'm having trouble with the pattern.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Helen and welcome to the forum.
Does this pattern you're working on have a name? It might help if we could find it and take a look at it. I'm sitting here at work on my lunch break and working on finishing my 10th pair of socks for this year and I have to say, those instructions have got me confused! No wonder you're struggling!

Is this sock worked flat and seamed? It looks like a heel flap worked in halves with the instep stitches in between. Yes, please do link to your pattern or tell us what it's called,

Good catch GG, I think you must be right. As she started with 38 stitches, the heel flap should be between 16 - 19 stitches wide, and she's got two lots of 8 stitches.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Yes the sock is worked flat. I did try to post images but I am not allowed to post images yet because I've only post one thread but perhaps when I post couple more threads I might be able to .

I started with 38 sts.

I've done 2 lots of 8 st sts with 9 rows each.

One on the right and one on the left

I've got the 12 sts in the middle on a holder is that right?

I hope I'll be able to post images then it can be clear what help I'm looking for.

Typically the stitches on the holder are the top of the foot stitches while you work on the heel, so I would expect to see some that aren't worked at this point. Those are sweet looking little socks!

Once you've made 3 posts you can add photos in to your post too.

You only did 3 decreases here so there should be 5 stitches left not 4, but the first section of the shape heel instructions left you with 4 stitches, so why the mis-match! The pattern name would really help, I want to look for it on Ravelry and see if anyone has written any notes about it.

Is this the part you are on now?

Shape instep

Next row With right side facing, k5 sts from the first holder,
pick up and k8 sts evenly along inside edge of hell and k5 sts from holder, 38 sts. (of course I'm having problem here too)

I think this is what you want to do: Knit the first 5 stitches from the flap on the right, pick up and knit 8 stitches going down the flap edge, knit across the middle, pick up and knit 8 stitches going up the other flap edge, knit the 5 stitches across the second flap. If I'm counting correctly this will give you the 38 stitches called for.

What comes next?
