fem, it might help you to either write out what the chart is calling for or say it outloud to yourself as you're doing each row...

for example i have a row that looks something like this

__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ X __ __ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Row 1
23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1

Key: __ or _ for knit stitches
X for purl stitches

Row 1, I read the chart from right to left so I start with stitch 1 of Row 1.

I knit all of the dashes (they are only pictured different sizes here so the row lines up) until I get to stitch 12. That's an X, so I know I need to purl it. And then I'll knit the rest of my dashes and I'm done.

On Row 2, you might see something like this.
__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ X __ X __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __

Key: R2- Row 2
__ for knit stitches*** see below, important!
X for purl stitches*** see below, important!

On row 2, I read from left to right this time. Since I'm on the other side of the fabric, and this is pattern is worked in stockinette, I need to maintain the integrity of the stockinette pattern, so my stitches will be reversed now. I'll PURL the knit stitches and KNIT the purl stitches. In other words:

P P P P P P P P P P K P K P P P P P P P P P P
23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10 09 08 07 06 05 04 03 02 01

This looks a little funky, but if you remember that the only thing you're really changing here is the knit stitches, and purling just like you would if you were on Row 2 of a stockinette stitch.

When it's time to go to row 3, you read from right to left again, and "knit the knits" and "purl the purls".

On the patterns, it doesn't usually tell you when to switch from knit to purl or have different symbols.
