2 questions about stitches

First off, I'm looking at a baby blanket pattern which has a seed stitch border. I've heard different ones here refer to that stitch, but don't know what it is, or more importantly, how to do it.

The other question I have is; some patterns I run across indicate stocking stitch. Is that the same thing as stockinette, or is it something different?

Here is a link that shows seed stitch, also called moss stich.

And yes, stocking stitch is the same as stockinette.

Just to clarify, although commonly confused as the same, seed and moss stitch are NOT the same stitches. Seed stitch looks different on every row, Moss stitch looks different on every 2 rows.

Now, I'm confused.

My pattern says:

3rd � 8th Rows - Repeat these two rows 3 more times to create the seed stitch border.

How will that create a seed stitch border? Are the instructions a misprint, possibly?

I don't think it will give you seed st. To get seed st on an EVEN number of sts: Row 1 = *k1, p1, rep* to end, Row 2 = *p1, k1 rep* to end. If you *k1, p1, rep * to end on the second row also, you'll get fisherman's rib.

If you are using and ODD number of sts, that's when you *k1, p1, rep* to end on all rows to get seed st.

Does that make sense?

Yes, I think it does. So, it would appear that the pattern is incorrect in calling the instructions for the border a seed stitch.

Now, I have to determine whether to follow the pattern's instructions for the border, or whether to stitch a seed stitch border.

If you are starting with an odd # of stitches, then yes your pattern is correct in calling it seed stitch.

The thing to remember is that to get a seed stitch, you need to purl the knits and knit the purls, so that the finished fabric looks like this.. like a checkerboard pattern of knits and purls:

KPKPKPKPKPK
PKPKPKPKPKP
KPKPKPKPKPK
PKPKPKPKPKP

If you're working in the round, the directions will be different than if you're turning your work.

Purl knits, knit purls-got it!

Since the cast on of that pattern is for an even number, I'm guessing it is not a true seed stitch. I did decide to go ahead and e-mail the lady whose site it is, with my concerns. That way, at least, if it is a misprint, she can correct it.

For now, I've decided to go on the assumption that it is a misprint, and rather than her instructions to:
