Knit with 2 strands?

I'm a beginning knitter, and I have a pattern that tells me to knit with 2 strands (of the same colour). I've searched and searched, but I can't seem to find any information on how to do this. Do I alternate them? Do I twist them together and use them like one really thick strand? (And it would be pretty thick, I think, since I'm working with boucle) Is there something else I should do that I haven't figured out?
Also, how can I tell which side is the right side and which is the wrong side? I've knit headbands and scarves and hats and the like before, but always with my great-aunt's guidance and corrections, and she never explained the 'sides' to me.

someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but every time I "knit with 2 strands", I just hold them together (strands lying side by side) and knit as if it's only 1 strand. no twisting.

as for "right side" and "wrong side" - sorry, I suck at explaining things but I'll give it a shot - for example, if your pattern is in stockinette, the right side would have all the little "v"s and the wrong side would look like garter stitch.

Jodi is right...All you have to do is hold those strands together like one strand...no twisting or anything required. After one row, it will feel quite natural!

Also, the "right" side is whichever side will "show". The wrong side of a piece of stockinette will be all purl sts (bumps, instead of v's).
