How to pick up a color for a small pattern

First off, let me say...I'm so glad there are so many people that contribute to the forum, because it feels like I'm just a plethera (sp?) of questions

Anyway, as I said before, I'm about to start some heart patterns on a baby hat (one of the patterns on KH). My question is...what do I do to change the color? It seems like all I'd do is pick up the CC for my working yarn at the appropriate spot. But then do I carry that yarn along, or leave a section of yarn for each heart?

It really depends on how the pattern is laid out. If you have a string of hearts that are rather close together, you can just carry the yarn to the next heart. but, if they're more than 5 or so stitches away from each other, you'll want to knit them intarsia style.

The pattern for the heart is:

Row 1: *k3 MC, k1 CC, k4 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 2: *k2 MC, k3 CC, k3 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 3: *k1 MC, k5 CC, k2 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 4: *k7 CC, k1 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 5: *k3 CC, k1 MC, repeat from * around.
Row 6: *k1 MC, k1 CC, k3 MC, k1 CC, repeat from * around.
