I tried to figure this on paper, and to maintain 30 stitches, I would say not to yo before the last stitch, so you would end with 3 knits.
On the third row, you start the row with k2 and end it with k2.
My only thought is that either you're missing a yo somewhere or not getting both stiches on the k2tog. Another thing to watch for is to make sure you're not knitting two together at the beginning of row 3. That might happen because there is so much k2tog elsewhere.
