knitty flora scarf

Not sure what this means.... I am finally making the flower but I am soooooo confused
The pattern says
P2tog, work 5 sts in patt, sl1, k1, psso. 7 sts.
I started out with 9 stiches. What does work 5 sts in patt mean such that I am left with 7 sts?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The five stitches in pattern just mean that you'll be working these five as normal. It's the p2 tog at the beginning and the sl1, k1, psso at the end that will decrease your stitches to 7, which is where you want to be.

You can find the decreases here.
