binding off for sleeve cap
Okay, you experts, help me out.

Iím working on the sleeve on my sweater, and Iím up to the sleeve cap. The directions say:

When work measures 46 cm bind off for sleeve cap at each end of every 2nd row 2 sts. once and 1 st. twice , then 1 st. on every 4th row twice, and again on every 2nd row 1 st. 5 times and 2 sts. twice. Then bind off rem. 15 sts.

So, the first part of the directions: ďWhen work measures 46 cm bind off for sleeve cap at each end of every 2nd row 2 sts. once and 1 st. twiceĒ When I try binding off at the end of a row, it leaves a bigger gap. Most patterns have required me to bind off at the beginning of a row.

So, letís say I bind off at the end of the row as directed.

Row 1 Ė work all stitches

Row 2 Ė bind off 2 stitches at the end of the row (right side of sleeve)

Row 3 Ė work all stitches

Row 4 Ė bind off 2 stitches at the end of the row (right side of the sleeve again)

If I do this, isnít the right side of the sleeve getting shorter, but the left side is not? The diagram shows the sleeve symmetrical on both sides, and it seems like it should be, since there are no different directions between the right sleeve and the left one.

I have looked online and there are not corrections for this pattern, so Iím assuming itís correct, but I canít make much sense of it.

You're correct in that you can't bind off at the end. Just doesn't work.

This is what I would do on this pattern:

Row 1- Bind off 2 st, work to end

Row 2 - Bind of 2 st, work to end

Row 3 - Work all stitches

Subsequent "Bind off" rows, --since you are only decreasing one stitch at each end on these rows, just knit two together at each end.

When you get to where you have to bind off 2 toward the end of the directions, do it at the beginning of the next two rows.
