I don't know if I can explain it, but I will try. When I knit the stitches go back and forth when I do a stocking stitch. They don't go straight up the material. The first stitch tilts left. The second stitch tilts right. It makes a cool pattern, but not if you want it to go straight.

If you want to see a twisted stitch, take a stitch off your needle, turn it around and put it back. Or easier yet--slip a stitch as if to knit--that twists it.

Sometimes when it looks as if a stitch is overlapping it could be that a stitch didn't slide off the needle all the way on the last row, so you have two rows worth of stitches on the needle in that spot, if that's at all clear.

Thank you both for explaining that to me. Now I understand. Ingrid , I now know why that happens and I can be more careful that it doesn't happen when I am knitting. Thanks so much. I guess the only way to figure these things out is to ask.
