Need gauge help!
I bought some gorgeous yarn and want to make my son a sweater. I can't find a free pattern that I like with the same gauge as the yarn using the recommended needle size for the yarn. So how do I adjust a pattern for the gauge I have? For example, the pattern I want to use has a gauge of 17stsx24sts=4" but the yarn I am using has a gauge of 23stsx30sts=4". I have tried using larger needles but I really don't like the way it looks, it's holey and uneven. This is the pattern I would like to use (all one color, though): Linon Brand cotton sweater

It sounds like the yarn that you bought is a sport or DK weight yarn, and the pattern you chose is designed for worsted weight. I would either look for another pattern in sport weight, or do this pattern with the yarn doubled. Using your yarn doubled, you may get a gauge closer to what the pattern calls for.
