New to Cabling

Ok so I want to make a cabled scarf for my dad for Christmas. I am having problems deciding which pattern to choose.

Before today I have never cabled before. But I decided to give it a try and after pulling things out a few times I think I've got it.

Do you have any advice for a new "cabler"?

Here are the patterns I am trying to choose from:

The first one has 1 cable and the second one has 6, I think. I really wanted two cables on the scarf but I couldn't find a pattern for it.
