Seed Stitch versus Moss Stitch

I noticed in the tutor for this stitch,they say its the same thing,but in several pattern books I have as well as on other sites,they have this:

> Moss Stitch
> Even # of sts

> Row 1: k1,p1
> Row 2: k1,p1
> Row 3: p1,k1
> Row 4: p1,k1

> Seed Stitch
> even # of sts
>
> Row 1: k1,p1
> Row 2: p1,k1

Seed St on Uneven number of stitches:

If you cast on an uneven number of stitches,i.e:17,19,etc...then for seed stitch you just knit 1,purl 1 across every row.It staggers the seed stitches and they are very pretty.

I always thought seed stitch and moss stitch are the same thing.

Sometimes it's called the same thing, but I was always under the impression that seed stitch alternates one k, one p, one row at a time. Moss stitch alternates the same way, but might use k2, p2 and/or 2 rows.

That's the way I've always seen it, too, Ingrid...

There is an Irish moss stitch that is a bit different, bigger mosses, sort of. I'd have to go find it in a book to be sure how it's done. mostly I've seen the two terms being used interchangeably. samm

I thought moss stitch built upwards in rows, while seed stitch was just every other stitch, or every two stitches.

So seed stitch looks like this on the right side:
k p k p k p k
p k p k p k p
k p k p k p k
p k p k p k p

Double seed stitch looks like this:
k k p p k k p p
p p k k p p k k
k k p p k k p p
p p k k p p k k

And moss stitch looked like this:
k p k p k p k
k p k p k p k
p k p k p k p
p k p k p k p

That was my understanding, anyways.

I just finished an item that featured moss stitch. Aylaanne is correct. Nice chart!

Seed stitch shows up evenly on every row. Moss stitch doesn't.

Thanks! That's what I do with complicated patterns, I plot it out on a piece of paper with the letters instead of symbols, it helps me figure out what I'm doing. When I have different directions for different rows, I'll chart out a row using those letters to tell me what to do, then I'll make a small chart of the right side so I can see what it looks like.
