Oh INGY!!!! (OR ANYONE) Gauge question

Okay, so I knitted up a swatch for my project, which is a hoodie made from Alpaca. It knitted up small (16 st to 3.5 inches, instead of 4 inches). But if I switch to larger needles the fabric I think will be too loose. Instead, I could just make one of the larger sizes, right? Like the large instead of the medium?

There is no link to the pattern, unless you have the fall 2005 Vogue Knitting, it is pattern #32.

I have done it that way, and it worked out. I don't know if there's any hard and fast rule about how much of a gauge difference equals a size difference, though. Once you've got it going, measure it and see if it's going to work.

Yeah, I wanted to play fast and loose and just make the larger size and see how it worked out, rather than trying to mess with the gauge. Thanks for the vote of confidence, I am going to go for it!
