Cast-On

Ive been using one similar to Double/Longtail/Continental cast-on with the exception of bringing the further side into the left loop. Ive found this method produces neater looking edges and you do not need to necessarily do a purl row after. But this method is tiring and hurts your hand after a while.

Ive also tried the Double/Longtail/Continental on this site but the results uneven and messy. This might be because I'm not used to this cast-on but I'm getting really annoyed.

Any suggestions?

I'm not quite sure I understand how you are doing the CO. I always do long tail unless the pattern requires something else. Have you looked at all the CO videos here?

I also do the longtail cast on, and find it to be very neat and even, suitable to just about everything. I make sure that my my tension is even across the row, and I think that with practice it makes a lovely edge.

OK, when doing the Longtail CO, you create some sort of a heart shape right?

Instead of taking the first loop of the right side, you just take the back loop-the loop next to the one seen on this site.

This method is really hard to control tension wise. And the Longtail CO on this site just doesnt WORK.....

I also use the long tail cast on for everything. I do it exactly as Amy shows it in the videos.

I wonder why it's not working for you.

There's anther video of the same technique here. maybe it has some different pointers that may help.

It does work, but you have to be doing it correctly. Did you check the links I posted. They are the same method, but sometimes it's easier to see how it's done by more than one person. The knitting at noon video is REALLY easy to follow!

OK, it DOES work....but it seems that one side is looser and um...fluffier?

Is it normal for it to be nubbly one one side and not the other?

I have found the difference between my method and the other. For this thread's sake, it will be called the Double Loop CO. It creates a neater cast-on edge and looks like (similar to) a braid. Its also VERY VERY hard to make a nice loose row.

Well actually it looks like a series of 'v's. (<<<<<<<<<<<) And both sides are nubbly-free!

The long tail cast on does have different sides--almost like a knit side and a purl side.

I believe that Amy even says in the video from this site that the long tail cast on essentially produces a knit row - so one side would look more nubbly (like the purl side of stockinette) and the other side would look smoother. Sounds like you're doing it correctly!

OK, I give up. I can do it for about five stitches then it turns out deformed.

Of course, by give up, I mean, do this cast on until I get it right and/or my fingers bleed.
