Tomato Baby Beanie Question

I'm making this tomato baby beanie pattern and am thinking about how I am going to do the leaves at the top. The pattern for the leaves begins

*k1 CC, k7 MC* and the two color work ends with k7 CC, k1 MC. I was thinking that I might be able to do a slip stitch thing in those two rows to avoid stranding yarn over 7 stitches in the inside of the hat. I thought I could do something like this.

Row 1 - *sl 1, k7 *
Row 2 - *k1 CC, put stitch back on left needle, k3 CC, k5 MC*

And then do it again for the top part of the leaves. Would this work or am I crazy?
Ariann Cardigan in Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece - 11 inches and two buttonholes done!
Tomato from No Sheep for You in Cotton Ease - nearly done! One sleeve left.
Tuscany from NSFY in Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool - it's working up beautifully.
Montego Bay Scarf from Summer 07 IK Knits in Sea Silk - an indulgent knit

Why make it more difficult? Just lay the yarn you're stranding over the fourth (or third & sixth) other-color stitch as you're going along and you won't have such a long strand on the back. You don't actually knit the one you're carrying, but you do catch it in the process of knitting the other color.
