cables - knitting the stitches while on the cable holder

I have been just knitting the stitch/es while they're still on the cable holder - is this okay? (instead of putting them back on my left side needles and knitting them from there)

I'm fairly new at this, but I just finished knitting a cabled purse. When I worked the cables, I knitted the stitches off of the cable needle and onto my right needle.
