varigated yarn and cables

Hi, I saw some pretty varigated yarn I might like to buy, and am also wanting to try a new cable pattern (I just finished an irish hiking scarf and love it), but wondered, would a varigated yarn look pretty with cables? Would the cables be harder to see because of the variations in the colors, etc? Anybody ever tried this? Insights would be helpful, because I'm fairly new to knitting and yarns.
