New knitter! Help with hat please!

I have just been knitting for a month or so. I live in S.Korea and cannot find double pointed needles, and they only have bamboo cable needles (with rather thick cables) and I really want to make a hat (for my baby and hubby)! Any tips?

Can I knit a few "triangle"-type pieces (say, 4 or 6) and then sew them together? Is that ridiculous?
