starting a new ball
I am knitting my first real garment and I'm to the point where I need to start another skein. When I was doing scarves and blankets I started at the end and made a knot, but I've heard that you shouldn't make knots (which makes sense). In SnB it says to just hold the new yarn with the old yarn to start the new skein, and then later weave the ends in, but wouldn't the finished product maybe pull apart?? This may be a really naive question, I just don't want the first top I make to turn out weird because I didn't know what I was doing... Help is much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

There's good information - and a video - of how to do this if you click the "Basic Techniques" tab (above) and scroll down. Good luck!

Funny, I was just watching the videos on doing joins. The Russian join sure looks like a neat way to do it.
