provisional cast on

Hi Everyone,

I am getting an early start on Christmas presents. I found a hat pattern I really like but it calls for a provisional cast on from crochet stitch, more specfically chain stitches. Could you please help? It also talks about the purl bump.
I am a real perfectionist with anything I make. I really would like this to be perfect.

Here's another site that is actually providing instructions for toe-up socks, but it begins with instructions for a provisional cast on. It mentions bumps too. You may want to take a look at it.

Thank you for all your help. I decided to give up on the hat as I didn't want to spend a lot of time hiding ends. It was the garter stitch in two colors and I really do like the pattern but it was the ends that made me change my mind. I found a hat on www.garnstudio.com which really like and I don't have to hid a lot of ends.
I replaced the garter hat with a crochet hat and scarf which is done. I am now doing the drops pattern.

Funny -- I just posted a question just a little while ago regarding the prov. cast on using crochet chains. Well, I tried again and again and finally was able to easily pull out the waste yarn. That seemed to be my problem. My instructions were to begin with crochet hook same size as knitting needle and chain the number of stitches required -- then, turn chain over and begin to knit into each of the bumps (which are visible once you turn the chain over) -- So, you are actually knitting stitches from the crocheted chain (not from the needle at this point). Well, I did more testing and finally figured it out. I think it will work out well now. The pattern has a lace type edging to be added once the scarf/shawl is completed and stitches are cast off and once the cast on stitches have been put onto needle again and waste yarn removed.
