difference between yarn forward and yo

Rowan pattern calling for 'yarn forward', never say this before, is it different from 'yo'?

The pattern already has 'yo' so I assume this is different, HELP

yarn over is wrapping the yarn over the needle to form an open increase. Yarn forward is simply bringing the yarn to the front.

Sometimes bringing the yarn forward creates a yo, but it can just mean to bring the yarn forward. If it's followed by a knit stitch, it will create the yo, but there may be another reason.

from the Rowan book - 'Calmer Collection' pattern is Cloud, it says:

K1, P1, yon, K2tog, (K1P1) twice, K1 (yfwd, K2tog) 3 times, yfwd, K2, (yfwd) twice, K2tog, K1

this pattern does contain the use of 'yo' so I am not sure how 'yfwd' is different. in the book abbr, it just says yarn forward.

Yarn Over is used to form an open increase, or, in your case, followed by a K2tog and thus creating an eyelet. You are simply creating a yarn over and then making a decrease after it to form a lace eyelet. Amy has a video for a yarn over (yarn forward) and a K2tog in the basic techniques section.

Yarn Forward can mean the same thing as a yarn over, but in other patterns, it can mean simply bring the yarn to the front of the work. Always check your pattern abbreviations to be sure, though.

So, on that row, you would:

Knit 1
Purl 1
Yarn Over
Knit 2 together
Knit 1, purl 1
Knit 1, purl 1
Knit one
Yarn over (yarn forward)
Knit 2 together
Yarn over (yarn forward)
Knit 2 together
Yarn over (yarn forward)

The difference between the two in this case is that yon is following a purl stitch, but the yfwd is between knit stitches. The distintinction is to make sure you wrap the yarn all the way around the needle when the purl stitch is before it, instead of just putting it over the top of the needle from the purl to the knit.
