MIL's request
My mother-in-law asked me to make her a waistcoat--basically, a V-neck cardigan vest. (Isn't that called a waistcoat?) I told her I would when I finished my Christmas knitting. She's 73 and very old-fashioned and won't wear anything cute. She's very pear-shaped and I'm worried about fitting her.

When I learned to knit last year, she told me it was a waste of time and money. So I'm kind of sad about the whole thing.

I've been looking around for a good pattern. I'll buy it if I need to, so if anyone has a link to a good pattern for sale, I'd really appreciate the link. I wasn't able to find the right one on the free pattern websites, but there's so many I'm sure I missed a few.

I can't knit in the round or do steeks yet, so I need to do it on straight needles. I really don't want to do all stockinette stitch (that's why my own sweater became a UFO halfway through), and would prefer a simple lace or cabled pattern, if anyone knows of one.

Thanks.

Don't worry! If you'll make it perfect, then maybe she'll be nicer to you and if not - from what i understood from your previous posts - she's not that nice to you, so it won't matter any way.
Is that what you meant by vest?

Kill her with kindness, make the vest she wants and if she doesn't wear it, at least you'll know you tried. My DH has put up with the world's worst MIL for 35 years, and has been a shining example to others through it all.

Jints, the first two from Royal Yarns are exactly it, especially the first one with the ribbed borders (the Casual Friday Vest). I personally like the third one from the Needle Nook website, too. Thank you so much. I'll register on the fourth website this evening. I'm going to burn up our supper if I sit here any longer right now!

Knittingnat, that's it (and I like that one) but she wants it to button up. I guess you're right, but I am a slow knitter and it's a pretty big investment of time for me if she won't wear it, and that is a real possibility. But it will be a gift, so I guess she can do what she wants to with it.

That's what I plan to do. I wish I could be a shining example like your DH but I haven't been so far. Maybe this could be a start.
