help with decreases
I'm new at knitting and need help with the pattern.
I have just completed these two rows:
p3 (C4 p5) to last 9 sts C4 p3
k3 (p4 K5) p4 k2 p1

the next instruction is :
(dec row) p3 , patt 4, p2tog, patt to end
work 3 rows straight

What does patt 4 mean??
If someone can help......

Pattern 4 means to work the next 4 stitches in the established pattern. Since you are doing a cable and the first row you give says: "p3 (C4 p5) to last 9 sts C4 p3", you will be on a row like that one. So you P3, then the patt 4 will be where your cable is. Unless it is a cable twist row you would just knit those 4 sts. Then when you get to the first p5 you will do a purl dec by purling 2tog, then p3. Then when it says, "patt to end" you will go back to the established pattern which is (C4, p5) repeated, and ending C4, p3.

This confuses me a little. Are you sure it doesn't say to the last 7? because it only gives directions for 7 sts not 9.

Pay attention to the numbers, but be sure you are not just doing it by the numbers but that the patterns you have established are lining up correctly.

I believe it means to work the established pattern for 4 stitches. If you can give us a link to the pattern it would help us give you more detailed help.

This helps. You are right, I wrote down 9sts instead of 7 sts!!
When the pattern reads "keeping patt cont in this way dec inside first 7 sts on every following 4th row", this means I should decrease the stitches inside the edging1 at at time every 4 rows?? Thanks For your help, I will sleep better knowing I can finish what I started.....

I think you are understanding it right.

Count 3 rows from your first dec and decrease again on the next, or 4th row. It will always be on a right side row. It sounds like you are to work 7 stitches that you say are the edging, then do the dec there, then continue in the pattern as it it is set up across the cable section, purling the purls and knitting the knits and crossing the cables where you are supposed to. Repeat as many times as it says.

You may find that the decreases eat into the pattern you have going and you'll have to drop out a set of purls or portion thereof and likewise with a cable.
