Just to add to Jan's post, if it's on straight needles, you knit a row then purl the next, repeating. So you're knitting on the RS (Right Side) and purling on the WS (Wrong Side).
If you're knitting in the round, on double point needles or a circular needle, you're doing the entire thing on the RS, and in that case stockinette is just a matter of mindlessly continuing to make knit stitches.
Since the pattern talks about rows, not rounds, I'm betting you're on straight needles, though.
