Stocking knit
Hello,

My pattern calls for 5 rows of stocking knit. Is that just k1,p1 over and over again? Then repeat on the other side?

No. Stocking stitch or stockinette is knit one whole row, then purl one whole row. If you were to knit 1, purl 1 across the row you'd be doing 1x1 ribbing.

Just to add to Jan's post, if it's on straight needles, you knit a row then purl the next, repeating. So you're knitting on the RS (Right Side) and purling on the WS (Wrong Side).

If you're knitting in the round, on double point needles or a circular needle, you're doing the entire thing on the RS, and in that case stockinette is just a matter of mindlessly continuing to make knit stitches.

Since the pattern talks about rows, not rounds, I'm betting you're on straight needles, though.
