Extra stitch

Hi! Here is the pattern...I cast on 97 sts. By the time I complete row 1, I have 98 sts. I don't know where I'm picking up an extra stitch...I have pulled it out and reknitted it 2X's! Thank you for all who can help me! And this is the very beginning...


Collar
CO 85 (85, 97, 109, 109, 133, 133) sts. Work 4 rows in St st, beginning with a k row.

Beginning on the RS, work one 11-row repeat of Diamond Mesh Lace either using the written
instructions or Chart #1 below.

Rows 1 and 5 (RS): K1, * (yo, ssk) twice, yo, sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1;
repeat from *

You might be getting an extra YO in there, or forgetting to pass a slip st over the k2tog. Also check to see your yarn is out to the side a little when you begin the row so you're not accidentally adding a YO when you knit the first stitch. Practice the pattern repeat with some other yarn on 25 sts and see how it comes out.

Hi..First, thank you for your reply! The first time I did the pattern, I figured that I would do something to mess it up, so I wasn't surprised that I had an extra stitch...But, the second time, I was very careful. So, now I'm very frustrated! But, I guess that is what I love about knitting...hitting my head against the brick wall...LOL...Thanks to all who reply..Linda

do you have all abbrev. translated right?

K1, * (yo, ssk) twice, yo, sl1, k2tog, psso, yo, (k2tog, yo) twice, k1, repeat from *

k 1 = same number of stitches
yo = increase by 1
ssk = decrease by 1
k2tog = decrease by 1
psso = decrease by 1

so, there is the same number of increase as decrease in this, you should end up with the same number as before.

that part settled:

when you start your row, is stitch 1 really just 1 stitch for you? or did you pull your working yarn over your needle instead of under? if you did, you really work the stitch below with both loops and therefore start out with a stitch more than you should.

one more tip:
use markers between all the pattern repeats for a start. (loops of string in a differente color work just fine). just hang them on the needle and slip them over when you get to them.

that way you can recount easier when you are done (and find that one repeat that messes you up) and you can keep better track when you work.

once you feel comfortable with the pattern, you will not need them a lot of times but if problems occur, they can be life savers.

btw. your last repeat will not be complete? or did I misscount? one knit stitch in the beginning... that leaves 96 stitches - and a repeat of 14. = 6 full repeats and that makes 1 + 84 = 85 of 97 so at the end there will be 12 stitches of that last repeat.... maybe the extra stitch is one to many increase in that last repeat? you have to cut instructions for lace short by keeping the number of stitches the same! that may mean, altering tha pattern if needed!

Hi! Thank you all again for your help. I will print out what you all have to say and keep it for future reference!!
I pulled everything out and restarted (again)...for some reason this cracks my husband up...he can't understand how this is relaxing and fun for me..LOL...Anyway, I was extra, extra careful(even though I thought I was the first 2 times) and it all came out right. I don't know if Iam doing the yarn overs right...is there a right way of doing them?? Thanks again! Linda

A YO is done just the same way you do a knit stitch, the difference is the R needle isn't inserted into a stitch on the L needle. But the movements and way you wrap the yarn around the needle are the same.
